Biography
Dr. Matthew Carlson earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Linfield University and received his Doctor of Optometry degree from Pacific University College of Optometry. During his training, he served as a clinical laboratory instructor and gained extensive hands-on experience working as both an ophthalmic technician and optician.
Dr. Carlson completed advanced pediatric externships through Pacific University College of Optometry and Northwest Pediatric Eye Care, where he developed a strong passion for pediatric vision care and binocular vision disorders. He was honored with the Tole Greenstein Award for outstanding achievement in binocular vision, vision therapy, and pediatric optometry.
Dr. Carlson leads PSEC's myopia control program — the longest continuously-operated myopia control practice in Seattle, with the Carlson family practice fitting Ortho-K since Paragon CRT received FDA approval in June 2002, and Matt personally leading the program since 2013. He fits the full evidence-based modality stack — Stellest spectacle lenses (Essilor, FDA-cleared 2025), Orthokeratology overnight contact lenses, low-dose atropine (0.01-0.05%), and multifocal soft contact lenses (CooperVision MiSight, FDA-cleared 2019) — and chooses the right treatment for each child based on axial length, refractive error, and family routine.
An active member of the Optometric Physicians of Washington, the American Optometric Association, and Special Olympics Washington, Dr. Carlson remains committed to advancing patient care and community involvement.
At Puget Sound Eye Care, Dr. Carlson specializes in the evaluation, treatment, and management of vision and eye disorders in both children and adults, including amblyopia, strabismus, eye alignment disorders, myopia progression, and complex binocular vision conditions.
